News from The Waste Team

Sywell School all joined in with Waste Week (12th - 18th March 2012). We had a great week, helped by Northants County Council who brought along their Waste Education Bus to teach Class 3 about  the 3 R's ( Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and they led workshops in Class 2 and 4 . We learned all about 'waste free lunches', recycling and problems with some packaging. We finished the week with a litter pick around the school grounds.

What happens next?

We held an assembly about the 3 R's and reminded everyone what goes in which bin - our target will be to make sure both sides of paper are used before recycling. We're going to compost all our fruit and vegetable peelings and recycle at home too!

 Fairtrade

Our Global Perspective Team worked hard to promote Fairtrade in the school and community during Fairtrade Fortnight (27th February - 11th March 2012). Thank you to everyone who filled out a footprint sharing what steps they were going to take  to support Fairtrade.

The committee has now put together a Sywell School Fairtrade Policy which has been ratified by the school Governors, Staff, PTFA, School Council and of course the Eco Committee!

RSPB Big Schools' Birdwatch

The Eco committee thought it would be really great to join in with the RSPB 'Big Schools' Birdwatch' from 16th - 30th January. The week before we made sure that bird feeders were in positiion and topped up every day.

We made a 'hide' in the school hall and on the day had three birdwatching sessions which lasted an hour each. We had an expert in to join us on the day (one of our Grandparents) to help us identify the birds. He was a fantastic help.

It was a cold, wet and grey day and we weren't that hopeful that we would see many birds but in the end we saw 13 different types. We saw Blackbirds, magpies, Robins, Collard Doves, Wrens, Dunnocks and a green woodpecker, which was busy eating ants on our playing field for about half an hour!

We all enjoyed the day thoroughly and have submitted our results to the RSPB. These will be addded to regional and national results. We look forward to comparing our results to those gathered around the country, and hope we can take part again next year.
